Candle Making Workshop

Candle Making Workshop Lights Up Eco-Learning in Malton
On December 1, 2022, the Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN), in collaboration with the Malton Women Council (MWC), hosted the second session in its Sustainability on My Mind workshop series. Held in Malton, Mississauga, the workshop focused on eco-friendly candle making, teaching participants how to create their own natural candles using simple, low-cost ingredients.
This was the second workshop in an eight-part series designed to provide residents in low-income communities with practical, sustainable lifestyle strategies. SCAN partnered with local non-profits across Malton to deliver the series, including MWC, a key collaborator for this event.
Partnering for Women’s Empowerment
The Malton Women Council (MWC) is a non-profit dedicated to empowering women and improving community well-being. MWC supports women, families, youth, seniors, and newcomers by offering programs in health and wellness, civic engagement, peer support, cultural connection, and skills development.
For this workshop, MWC selected participants from within its support network, including newcomers, single mothers, youth, and survivors of domestic abuse. This collaboration allowed the workshop to align with MWC’s mission and directly benefit those who could most use the skills and community support.
Creating More Than Candles
During the hands-on session, participants learned how to make natural, eco-friendly candles from scratch. In addition to learning about ingredients and techniques, attendees gained awareness of the environmental benefits of switching to homemade products.
Each participant received a take-home toolkit, including materials used in the session, enabling them to continue making candles at home and potentially turn the skill into a small business or shared community activity.
About the Series
The Sustainability on My Mind series aims to equip residents of Malton with low-cost, eco-conscious tools and knowledge to improve their lives and communities. Whether it’s personal care, household goods, or sustainable habits, each workshop brings practical change within reach.
This series is made possible through funding from the Community Foundations of Canada, the Community Foundation of Mississauga, and the Government of Canada.
