Green Cleaning Products Workshop

Green Cleaning Products Workshop Wraps Up Successful Sustainability Series in Malton
On Monday, June 26, 2023, the Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN) hosted the final workshop in its current Sustainability on My Mind series. Held in Malton, Mississauga, this last session focused on teaching participants how to make eco-friendly cleaning products using natural, low-cost ingredients.
The workshop was facilitated by My Centrepeace, a local environmentally conscious small business known for its handmade, sustainable, plant-based products. The session marked the culmination of the eight-part workshop series aimed at helping residents in low-income communities adopt more eco-conscious lifestyle practices at little to no cost.
What Participants Learned
Attendees took part in a hands-on workshop where they made two effective and environmentally friendly household cleaners:
- All-Purpose Cleaner: Made by combining Castile soap with distilled water in a reusable spray bottle. The mixture was shaken until fully blended, creating a safe and effective alternative to chemical sprays.
- Soap Scrub Cleaner: Participants mixed Castile soap and water into a mason jar pre-filled with baking soda to form a gritty, natural scrubbing paste ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.
Once completed, participants labeled their products and took them home, along with the knowledge to recreate the cleaners independently using accessible ingredients.
Streamlined Setup by My Centrepeace
My Centrepeace supplied all workshop materials, pre-packed in eco-friendly paper bags for ease of distribution. Each participant received:
- A tube of Castile soap
- A glass spray bottle
- A mason jar filled with baking soda
- A microfibre cloth
- Three spoons
- Four blank labels
- Paper cups for distributing distilled water
The facilitators also brought large bottles of distilled water for the all-purpose spray.
This well-organized setup allowed SCAN to focus on community engagement while My Centrepeace managed the materials and facilitation.
What’s Next?
While this marked the conclusion of the current Sustainability on My Mind workshop series, SCAN plans to launch a new session starting this September, featuring more hands-on, eco-friendly workshops for the Malton community.
The series is proudly funded by the Community Foundations of Canada, the Community Foundation of Mississauga, and the Government of Canada.
