Sustainability on My Mind Kicks Off with Moisturizing Hand/Body Butter Workshop

On November 29, 2022, the Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN), in partnership with the Malton Black Development Association (MBDA), hosted the first workshop in the Sustainability on My Mind series in Malton, Mississauga. This inaugural session focused on creating Moisturizing Hand and Body Butter using eco-friendly, low-cost ingredients.

The workshop marked the beginning of an eight-part series aimed at equipping residents in low-income communities with practical, sustainable lifestyle skills that can be implemented at home. SCAN partnered with local non-profit organizations, like MBDA, to ensure inclusive community engagement and effective workshop delivery.

Empowering Through Collaboration

The Malton Black Development Association (MBDA) is a Black-led Canadian non-profit committed to promoting the well-being of the Black community through educational, cultural, and social programming. For this workshop, MBDA selected participants from within its network and used the opportunity to fulfill its mandate of building inter-community relationships and supporting cultural learning.

DIY Body Care: Natural, Accessible, and Empowering

Participants learned how to make their own moisturizing hand and body butter using natural ingredients that are both skin-friendly and environmentally safe. The hands-on workshop provided step-by-step guidance and highlighted the benefits of switching to homemade personal care products.

Each attendee received a take-home toolkit containing all the necessary ingredients and materials to recreate the product at home—encouraging continued use and knowledge sharing.

The workshop also offered space for community connection, cultural exchange, and dialogue about sustainable living.

Workshop Facilitator Spotlight

The Homemade Laundry Detergent session in the same series was later facilitated by Dayna, who guided participants through a similar hands-on process focused on practical, sustainable living.
