Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition
Workshop on Natural Remedies for Cysts and Boils
Empowering Seniors Through Natural Healing
SCAN continues its Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition series with a workshop focused on natural remedies for cysts and boils. Held at the Malton Community Centre, this session invites seniors to explore culturally rooted, hands-on approaches to managing common skin conditions in safe, sustainable ways.
Supported by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), this initiative empowers older adults with the knowledge and skills to lead their peers in natural health practices and community wellness.
Understanding Cysts and Boils
The workshop begins with an overview of cysts and boils—what they are, why they form, and how they can affect the body. Participants learn that cysts are often the result of infections, clogged glands, or skin irritation, and while typically harmless, they can become painful or inflamed.
By exploring natural solutions, the session offers safe, non-invasive methods to help manage these conditions at home.
Natural Remedies in Action
✅ Remedy 1: Herbal Poultice for Small Cysts
The first remedy shared is a herbal poultice, a healing paste made from turmeric, ginger, onion, garlic, and coconut oil. Community member Annie, who now lives in Malton but originally hails from Guyana, leads the demonstration. She explains how this traditional remedy—passed down through her in-laws—has helped treat minor cysts naturally and effectively.
✅ Remedy 2: Eddoe Poultice for Larger Cysts
For larger cysts, Annie introduces the use of an eddoe poultice, made by softening the root vegetable and applying it directly to the affected area. Known for its drawing and healing properties, eddoe helps the cyst naturally break and drain over time. The method is simple, practical, and easy for seniors to replicate at home.
⚠️ Participants are encouraged to consult healthcare professionals for persistent or severe symptoms.
Hands-On Learning & Community Connection
The workshop is highly interactive, with seniors joining in to create both remedies alongside Annie. Materials are provided for participants to take home, reinforcing their confidence in applying what they’ve learned. Beyond the hands-on practice, the workshop sparks meaningful conversations, with attendees sharing personal stories and cultural approaches to healing.
This event becomes more than just a learning experience—it becomes a space for connection, collaboration, and empowerment.
A Step Toward Greater Wellness
SCAN’s Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition continues to highlight the value of holistic, affordable, and culturally relevant health practices. By tapping into community wisdom, these workshops help seniors live more self-sufficient and health-conscious lives.
