Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition

Workshop on Natural Remedies for Skin and Hair Health

About the Workshop

The Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition series continues with a hands-on session focused on natural skin and hair care for seniors. Held at the Four Corners Health Centre in Mississauga, this event invites older adults to explore traditional, sustainable remedies that support overall well-being.

This initiative, supported by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), empowers seniors to become community educators and leaders by sharing cultural knowledge and holistic practices with their peers.

 Workshop Overview

The workshop is led by Vinda, a Jamaican-born senior with deep knowledge of natural remedies and a background in cooking and sewing. Vinda introduces participants to an herbal-infused oil used to promote hair growth and maintain scalp and skin health—especially helpful for those experiencing hair thinning or alopecia.

Through a live demonstration, Vinda shows how to prepare the oil using simple, accessible ingredients. Attendees are invited to follow along and gain hands-on experience making the remedy themselves.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Understand the Causes of Hair Loss:
Learn how hormonal changes, nutrient deficiencies, stress, and medical conditions impact hair health in older adults.

  • Explore Herbal Benefits:
Discover how herbs and natural oils can help soothe the scalp, strengthen hair, and nourish aging skin.

  • Build Practical Skills:
Gain confidence in creating and applying natural remedies that can be used safely at home.

Why It Matters

This workshop not only promotes self-care and sustainability—it also celebrates intergenerational wisdom. Seniors like Vinda share cultural traditions passed down through generations, fostering a greater sense of community, empowerment, and pride.
