Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition

 Heart Health, Nutrition, Metabolism

 Introduction

The Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN) proudly launches its first Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition event at the Malton Community Centre in Mississauga. With support from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), this groundbreaking program empowers seniors to lead the way in promoting natural remedies and holistic health practices.

 Empowering Seniors as Educators

This event focuses on enabling seniors—especially those in underserved or low-income communities—to become health advocates and peer educators. SCAN recognizes that seniors hold a wealth of lived wisdom. By equipping them with practical, culturally rooted wellness knowledge, the program fosters peer-to-peer learning and a strong sense of community support.

Leading the session is Angie Munnick, a respected community member whose interest in natural health blossoms through conversations with friends. Angie shares her journey and demonstrates how natural solutions can address common health challenges seniors face.

Understanding the Importance of Heart Health

Heart health stands at the center of the day’s discussion. As we age, the body undergoes changes that impact cardiovascular wellness, including:

  • Arteriosclerosis – stiffening of the arteries
  • Heart muscle weakening – which can reduce heart function
  • Increased cholesterol and inflammation – key risk factors for heart disease

Participants also explore how metabolism and digestion slow with age, due to a decline in Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and nutrient absorption. Combined with reduced muscle mass and appetite, seniors may be at risk of nutritional deficiencies.

 The Power of Herbal Smoothies

To address these concerns, Angie introduces a nutrient-dense herbal smoothie, designed to support:

  • Heart health
  • Digestive balance
  • Metabolism
  • Reduced inflammation

These smoothies blend herbs, leafy greens, and natural ingredients like:

  • Herbs (e.g., ginger, turmeric, mint, parsley) for antioxidants and healing
  • Vegetables (e.g., spinach, kale, cucumber) for vital nutrients
  • Liquid bases like water, green tea, or coconut water for hydration and flavor

Participants learn how these smoothies can easily become a daily habit that supports long-term health and vitality.

 A Community-Centered Wellness Experience

The session is hands-on, encouraging seniors to observe, ask questions, and try out ingredients themselves. The atmosphere is lively and collaborative, with participants sharing personal stories, tips, and experiences with natural remedies. The event offers more than information—it provides a space for cultural exchange and community bonding.

 Key Takeaways

  • Empowered Learning: Seniors leave with practical knowledge they can use and share.
  • Health Awareness: The session highlights key challenges like heart disease and slow metabolism.
